Things to do In Charleston, SC

What is it like living in Charleston, SC?
I love living here. The weather is always great or just wait a day and it will be. Nice 10-15 mph breezes. Beautiful Beaches and Ravenel Cable Bridge to walk. The people are kind and friendly.
What is different about living in Charleston, SC?
The natives drive very slow or pull out in front of you about 20 feet in front of you. There are accelerating lanes onto the express ways but most people do not move over to let you get on, and they are going under the speed limit in the slow lane. If you figure on averaging 30 MPH to any location in Charleston, you will not frustrate yourself.
Many roads have a Turn Lane and most visitors do not use this lane for its intended purpose. Please use the turn lanes. Be careful though. Sometimes the natives are riding their bikes in that lane too, day or night. Some with reflective tape or reflectors and some NOT. This practice appears to be worse on James Island as you head to Folly Beach on Folly Rd.
Any Friday is always an interesting day in Charleston, SC. Many companies have an unwritten policy and the employees, owners, etc. leave for the weekend no later than Noon on Friday and sometimes don’t come in at all. This was difficult to get used to, but now living here for several years, I understand. It is so beautiful here and most people will go boating, fishing, biking, or begin to travel somewhere or just take the day and garden all day. They do relax and enjoy their city and homes here. I think we could all take a lesson from these gentile Charlestonians.
True southerners are never in a hurry. My husband, Lou, refers to Charleston as the Slow country. It is also referred to as the “low country”. When you ask them when can something be done? They will give you an approximate day ‘next week’. Rarely do they hit that day. Always, call the vendor first, a few days before, to see if it will be ready when they said it will. This could save you a few extra days. Example: when the Sullivan’s Island Swing Bridge was recently replaced, the contractors were held to a penalty, “by the hour” if they were not finished. The job was completed on the last day, the last hour, at Midnight in fact. The mayor of Sullivan’s Island drove his antique car across the bridge at 12:01am. The bridge is beautiful and operates well.
The mayor of Charleston, SC, is Joseph Riley. A 9 consecutive term mayor.
When driving in downtown Charleston, SC Please be careful to watch for the stop lights on the corners of the streets. About 9’ off of the corner sidewalk. Be careful when you have the arrow to turn right of left, watch for pedestrians. Pedestrians have the right of way. We have many municipal parking garages through out the city. They are usually 4 or 5 stories high and usually at a corner. Parking is fairly reasonable. All day for $7.00.
Parking in the residential Parking Zones requires you to have a Residential Parking Sticker to park there longer than 2 hrs. Never park in a parking lot that says Tow Away or Boot installed. They will do either and it will cost you about $45.00 Cash or Credit Card to get the Boot off. It has happened to me twice. The owners of these parking lots make more money with the Towing companies than they do to hire someone to park cars for a fee. Go figure. Always put more coins in the parking meter too. The parking tickets are $8.00 and you could have parked in a parking garage, all day for $7.00.
When walking across the street. Try to cross at the intersections, on the Walk Light. Do not try to outrun the cars crossing the middle of the street. We are a friendly city, just not a patient one…sometimes. Our Taxi Cabs are well Marked. We also have Ped-a-cabs. A college student works for the Pedi cab company, will have a bicycle hooked to like a rickshaw. They can go anywhere downtown. Tip them well. Most Pedi cabs can be picked up regularly at Market and Church Streets, where all of the Carriage Rides depar
